How to Run a Free Internet Speed Test

SpeedCheckTest measures three things about your connection in real time: ping (how quickly your device gets a response from the server), download speed (how fast data arrives), and upload speed (how fast data leaves). 1. Close bandwidth-heavy apps

Streaming, large downloads, cloud backups and video calls all consume bandwidth and can drag your numbers down. Pause them for a minute so the test measures your connection, not whatever else is running on your network.

2. Test on the connection you care about

3. Run several tests at different times

One test is a snapshot, not a verdict. Network congestion tends to peak in the evening, so test in the morning, afternoon and evening — on weekdays and weekends — and compare the averages. That gives you a realistic idea of the speeds you get every day, not just once.

What the Numbers Mean

Speeds are shown in Mbps (megabits per second): the higher the number, the more data flows each second. Ping is measured in milliseconds (ms), and lower is better. As a rough guide: 25+ Mbps is the FCC's minimum for modern broadband, roughly 100 Mbps comfortably handles streaming and gaming in most households, and a ping under 20 ms feels excellent for fast-paced online games.
